I quick run down from our best friend Wikipedia:

Ryona (リョナ), which comes from ryonanī (リョナニー?), portmanteau of ryōki (猟奇?, bizarre) and onanī (オナニー?, masturbation), is a Japanese term for a sexual complex where a female character is, usually sexually, attacked or tortured by either a man or another female character(s). In the Western world, it refers specifically to artwork or manga depicting a physically hurt or wounded girl in sexual situations. While the term is recent, the theme has been in western culture since the 70's such as in horror films that features women being murdered or tortured. Ryona art is often explicit in nature; some common themes include Sadism.

Ryona is the reason for this site being here. I posted my videos on YouTube for awhile but lately I've grown tired of getting reported for copyright infringement and breaking community guidelines while being bombarded by trolls. It's a work in progress but I will be moving all my existing videos here and any new videos I make from now on will only be posted here.

You should point out that Wikipedia's definition is an extreme one. Not everyone like to see video game girls tortured or murdered with blood and gore.

As for me (and I'm sure there's many like me), I have a combination of ryona and voyeurism. I like to watch, not to act. And I don't like blood and gore, I just like girls running out of health. That doesn't sound nearly as bad as Wikipedia makes it sound.

Gotta agree with this 100%. I guess you can put the genre into two different perspectives (I'm using game examples just to get the point across). One is the one which refers to the actual death/torture of a girl (Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat for what they have to offer) and the other that has the whole vulnerable, into submission theme to it (Dead or Alive, Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc). Most of us who like the genre would also NEVER do any of its acts in actual real life, which is where a lot of people who don't understand it seem to always assume that we would.

However there is a bit of a difference to how things ends up. When there's a case of blood and gore being the main point, that would actually be more into the lines of "guro" rather than ryona. Ryona's like the "lite" version of it for lack of a better term; more along the lines of the girl being defeated & roughed up rather than flatout killed. At least that's how I would put it.

Indeed, it is, though apparently, people who posts items on ryona messageboards seem to enjoy putting "guro" and "hardcore porn" items (sometimes) instead, which is imho rather disappointing. In any case, I have a question: a lot of those ryona doujin mangas seem to often begin with some psycho masochistic guy roughing up a girl and then f*cking her, is there no such manga that excludes the hentai element? I'd appreciate some recommendations.

I think all doujins have hentai in them by definition? I've never really been too into those myself so I'm not certain but it seems that way.

So you're looking for comics that just shows women getting roughed up/defeated with no sex? I've never run across anything like that really as far as comics go. I suppose that's why video games are so commonly used for the ryona that doesn't involve rape or guro type stuff.

Err... Nope, I never did, though I know what you are referring to. Let's just say I don't quite like the style at which the sprites were drawn.... oversized boobs, etc which I can't explain. I happen to like the boxing girl in Battle Slave.

Looking back on this discussion, which was before I found my way here, I realize that we are all not drawn to ryona for the same reasons. Watching a lot of content you guys are awesome enough to get and joining discussions, I think it lends itself to learning more about yourself. For example, I think I've learned I'm more toward the "extreme" part of the spectrum. The f3mm1x videos are just too "light" for me, maybe because I used to watch pro-wrestling religiously.

I'm not really into the guro/hardcore sex, either, don't get me wrong. I see ryona as the defeat of a girl in some way, by some form of domination. The way ryona 'ends' I think is what separates us all. Some like voyeur (or a form of humiliation), others like "knockouts" (ie not dead but defeated), impending death (not guro but teasing it), guro (obviously) or sexual domination. So really I think ryona is broad and the definition at the top can come off like it's all about sex.

A word about vore, while the general topic is around, I notice it's not extremely popular here. I happen to fancy it and have an image source that could be a project in itself. I have been holding my breath over it, not posting until I hear from enough people that they want it. I just assume posting a sampling wouldn't hurt, but it's important to hear from actual users that would read this and not just lurkers going into the vore forum.

I agree noice, we are all a bit different like that, however I've rerely seen my kind of ryona niche, where its all about a tough (and sexy) girl winning, but not in the sense of dominating some man, like those wrestling videos we get plenty of. But more in terms of getting a whooping first, and then perhaps defeating the other guy and saying something like "that's all you got you big pussy!". :) Or girls toughing it out, taking it like pros (they have to be strong women, not those tiny and frail anime girls), or something like that, and I also like a little story to it sometimes. If you remember the videos of a youtube user named glutton you'll get the idea, although his acc is discontinued now.

I can't say I had the pleasure of knowing glutton's work or what he uploaded, but I do agree that some story is helpful to give color to the scene. Kinda like a super-heroine falling into a female villain's trap. Video games always provide this, and that's why they're my favorite medium.

I think that's a gray area. It depends on the context. Humiliation is a world in its own, I think it can be an element of ryona, but by itself stands alone.

Well the very definition of ryona is a female of some variety being "attacked" in some way and ultimately defeated. The discussion was centered around if sexual humiliation could be ryona, and I simply said it could be a part in a ryona scene, but on its own, it's a different fetish. See: BDSM.
