I recommend that you take a look at the Newbie Guide. It can answer many of your initial questions and walk you through a few of the basic mod-related activities.
You open the in-game menu, switch to the third tab ("Modding") and then copy-paste your code into the textbox. Once that's done, you click the Load button below the textbox.
