Hey everyone, I'm Riley, long time lurker, first time poster. Also a long time amateur game developer and artist, and semi-professional writer and porn star. I've never put my game dev stuff out for anyone to see before (besides friends), but I've been in a rut in life recently and really need to throw myself into something productive and community oriented, so here I am, and here's my project!

Story:
Countercult (stylized Counter.culT) is a hentai RPG based in a modern day setting where every urban legend, ghost story, and fairy tale is a dangerous reality. Inspired by The Secret World and various JRPGS and hentai RPGs, Countercult puts you in the shoes of Haethyr, a young, newly graduated teen who takes a leap from her deadbeat, listless existence in the Opal Hills to the dark, ethereal underbelly of the world she thought she knew.

When a violent encounter with the seedier elements of the city's underworld leads to a dramatic rescue by a mysterious young girl, Haethyr finds herself face to face with the only thing separating the fragile peace she's so accustomed to and something entirely different: Countercult, a patchwork but highly effective organization of hunters, scholars, and diplomats sworn to keeping the bogeymen of the world under the bed where they belong, and cutting them down when they get out.

Haethyr quickly learns that going toe to toe with the monsters under the bed is a dangerous step outside her peaceful but boring existence. Monsters have teeth, and whether they're made of flesh and blood or not, they aren't lacking in sinister appetites. Haethyr's feisty temperament and affection for all things involving sharp edges and cold metal barrels make her a neat fit in the secret society, but the price of excitement may be steeper than she anticipated...

Sometimes pain and death is a more desirable fate than what the darkness hungers for.

About:
Countercult is made in RPG Maker VX Ace and doesn't turn based combat on its head, but rather focuses on making it as balanced, fun, and non-grindy as possible. Instead, the innovation comes in the form of deep character customization through a dual class system, highly unique combat styles giving you the option of fine tuning your party to whatever role you want, whether it be offense, defense, support, or anything else. Want an all out attacker? Create a marksman/warlock to hurl a constant rain of bullets and magic at your foes. Looking for something more supportive? Maybe a cleric/demonist is more your speed, healing your party while crippling your enemies with devastating curses. The possibilities are near endless.

Another key component of Countercult is the refusal to compromise on story or sharp, engaging gameplay while still being a dirty, depraved hentai game as well. As fun as some h-games out there are, something always seems to suffer, whether it be dumbed down gameplay, lackluster story (especially if you're wading through partial/machine translations, usually full of cringey "lewd" dialogue), or cliche, tired settings and tropes. This game is a huge undertaking, but the aim is to make something as fun as a game like Violated Heroine, packing a deep, engaging story like you may find in a text adventure, and still offering a wealth of sexy graphics and h-scenes. It's a huge undertaking, but I don't cut corners!

Lastly, my vision involves making Countercult as much of a free, open-world romping ground where you can go anywhere, take any mission, and indulge in a wealth of debauchery. As fun as that sounds, however, games that focus on an open-world experience also tend to feel very aimless, unguided, and are often lacking scenarios (erotic and otherwise) that do a good job of pulling you in. That's why my goal is to bridge the gap between open-world and linear story-driven content, giving you a variety of game over/defeat scenarios, side missions and scenes, along with an engaging main quest to keep the sense of progression and keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Countercult is a monumental undertaking, but once it starts getting flesh out, it's going to be amazing!

Cost:

Countercult is free!

I plan on creating a Patreon for voluntary support and offering different incentives to support my passion, but for the foreseeable future, Countercult will be free to download. I juggle two jobs as a freelance writer and camgirl, though, and I don't get a whole lot of time to pursue projects like this, so the expediency of updates is going to rely heavily on fan support when I put out a solid demo and create my Patreon!

Closing:

I think that's all I got for now! I'm just posting this on the dev forum because the game is more concept than anything. So far I've got maybe 20 minutes of gameplay done, and most of that is just walking around and talking. There's only one battle implemented (which is unbeatable) and one h-scene half in there. If you're looking for a deep experience or to get your rocks off, I'd look elsewhere for the moment.

On the other hand, if you're interested in checking out the groundwork for a really cool project, feel free to download the "demo" (it really isn't even a demo) below! I'd love to hear what you think as long as it's not TOO brutal. If you've got any comments about my awful art, you're preaching to the choir. The art in the game is getting replaced at the moment as my art skills have somewhat improved, but art is not my strong suit. It's a learning experience.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks! Happy to be here. Hope people enjoy my amateur efforts! :)

Everyone starts someplace, I was a lurker myself for years and I'm telling you now, this is a great place to step out and show your work, not for high-activity you'll get, but for general support you'll get when people do post.

I'm excited to see what comes of your project! it sounds like an interesting setting, decent gameplay and a nice art style.

To each their own I suppose, haha. The new art is definitely a work in progress, so hopefully once it's finished it'll blow away what I've got now.

I just wanted to steer away from the cartoon network looking style and go with something more advanced.

Thanks, I hope I can get something out there that somewhat resembles a solid demo soon so I can give people a good idea of what's to come!

Fair enough, thank you for your hard work.

I finished up the new bust! Maybe you still prefer the other style, but let me know what you think. :)

I'm aware the shadows are nonsensical and honestly my shading skills are really bad, but I'm relatively happy with it.

EDIT: Undies too!

Been a little slow, but Haethyr has clothes now! Her trademark slacker sweater. May tweak it a bit, cut some holes in it, but all in all it's done. I'm awful as clothes and wrinkles and all that but I tried my best.

Not bad, you can draw clothing better then I can, so basically if you put holes in her it to make her look like a scrub girl, BTW is she a stoner?

Yeah, I may try to make it look a little more grungey. And yeah she is, lol. You'll get an idea of it if you check the "demo" out.

Yo Vul, found a bug with your game, I was playing the demo and trying to figure out how to get downtown and when I click on the mirror I was asked if I wanted to see a picture/protract of the character and got an error saying *Unable to find File*

But from what I have seen of the game so far it's not to bad I think there maybe another error I tried to get into the house next the player's house and I ended back up at the player's house instead of the neighbour's house.

Oh, yeah the game isn't actually in a normal, playable state. That's why I call it a "demo", haha.
