I'm using the version you uploaded years ago and it still works well for me! Only thing that would be nice to have is the needed files for games made in some engines that require you to have certain files from engine/development kit. I can't remember the names, but I think rpgmaker was one that required you to have some files in order to play games made with it.

I've switched from VMWare Player to Oracle VM VirtualBox because a few years ago RyonaniXP crashed and wouldn't boot again.
A virtual OS set to Jap non-unicode, with the old RPG Makers, a translation program and a text extractor already installed would make it very easy for the average computer newb to play most Japanese games, but dunno if setting that up would be worth your while.

I'm still using one you created. I had to crank up the ram allocation and tweak it a bit, but it works really well in most games except those that detect they're in a virtual machine and close. By the way, what programs can you use to customize the boot-up process? It's pretty sweet.

Someone92, I stopped using VirtualBox because I received unstable updates 2 or 3 different times that caused my system to crash. The bugs usually got fixed a month after it comes out, but I got tired of watching the changelog for stable versions.

Hey, so I am currently writing this to you from RyonaniXP! And I would love, love, love (!) a new release that's maybe a tad bit more modern. I think XP is fine and it (somehow) fixed a bug with WolfsDungeon for me, but the RAM being only 512MB (if i remember correctly) makes a Firefox with even minimal addons (basically just Adblock and RedditEnhancementSuite) choke already. Now you might be asking "well, then why the fuck would you use this to browse the web with FF 43.0.1?! That's not what I put on there and not what it's for! It's for playing porn games." And I will answer to that: I transferred all my NSFW / porn activities to the virtual machine that started as RyonaniXP. Porn games (quite a lot) and browsing (so I can use history and bookmarks). I created a new user account with admin rights and a password, made entering the password mandatory again (weirdly enough it was disabled), set the account up and updated Firefox so I could install the addons, downloaded the "new" RPGmaker files downloaded my porn games. Now I can play and download whatever I want and as soon as I shut off the VM you can't see what I did unless you crack my password or somehow manage to find where the program saves the files for the VMs (I don't know if they even are on my disk in the form they would be if I were to I install them on the PC without a VM, or if they are somehow scrambled or encrypted or whatever, but the main thing is you cant search for them). This is awesome! Privacy and being incognito with the benefits like desktop shortcuts, neatly named folders and so much more. I can only recommend doing it this way. But yeah, 3D games and unity games won't work (as expected on winXP) and many bigger games really don't like the RAM contraints. I have a whole nature reserve of 16GB RAM and they are still cramped in a 512MB cage. :( I also tried upping the RAM in the VM program, but it made Windows want to register again and I don't want to have to pay for an 14 year old OS (don't even know if that's what that registering stuff is, i just didn't want to deal with it so I went back to 512MB). Aw well, point is: I would definitely support a new release of this, I can only say it has helped me (when it works)!

Welp. Oh man, I got a small story to tell. I'll try to retell it like I remember it, but I was tired so I may have messed the timeline up somewhere along the way, which probably got me into this situation in the first place. Okay, so:

After I wrote that last post up, I was thinking I should check my facts with those files. I found out that the data is in ".vmdk" disk files and you (or at least I) can't see what's in them. Great, right? So I also noticed I still had some stray games and files lying around from when I hadn't "quarantined" all my porn to the VM, and decided to delete them.
"Now everything is hidden, great!" - "Let's clean the Recycling Bin and all is well." - "Wait! Let's check if I put anything by mistake in there.... Nope. Looks good." - *delete permanently* ... So there's this thing on Windows that tells you your recently opened items and I decided "that's not good, you could find my VM way easier with that and then you could google RyonaniXP and find this thread and AAAAH!" - *delete* - "Wait, did that delete the files or just the entries in the recents-thingy?" - *checks Recycling Bin* - "Hm, nothing here, so it has to have left my files." ... *goes to bed* ... *wakes up, browses Internet, wants to check porn forums*

*R*...*Y*...*X*...*P*...
...
"Where did my shortcut go? Weird. Ah well, I gotta browse the folder manually, big deal haha..." - *does so* - "EMPTY?? Wtf? Ah, yeah. those recent files. Haha what a shock! It's in my recycling bin." - *checks bin*

(note: maybe I deleted the recents before cleaning the bin, but I didn't see those files in the bin when I checked)​

TL;DR: I deleted my RyonaniXP after about a month of (almost) daily use.

I have since tried a data recovery tool and found the deleted files, but when I recover them, the VMware player doesn't like them. Now, I said somewhere that one of the advantages of a VM is that if it gets infected or something else happens to it, you can just redo the whole thing and everything is fine. That was before I had a neatly organized system with all the games already with translation patches installed and everything though! :(
Ah well, it happened, and I guess I have to move on now. What should my new system be? I learned I should back up my shit, and not to delete stuff when you're tired, even though you think you are paying attention. But now would also be a nice time to think about upgrading it.

FAQ:
Q: What is RyonaniXP?
A: RyonaniXP is a virtual machine of Windows XP SP3. The goal of it is to give you the ability to play those wonderful Japanese games that are always a pain in the ass to get working on your own machine due to regional settings, missing dependencies, driver issues, and whatever else.

Q: What do I need to run it?
A: Any desktop or laptop made in the last 5-6 years should be able to handle running this virtual machine in VMWare Player. The image itself is about 4 GB and the swap file is 768 MB so I suggest 5 GB of free space. I know that seems kind of heavy, but you can always shrink it a bit by deleting the included games and only keeping the ones you want on there.

Q: Will game X run on it?
A: I can't give any guarantees but every game I've tested on it so far has worked. This is the first release and I didn't have anyone to help me test it. Future releases may be improved. The goal is to have a standard machine for everyone to use to run games so troubleshooting is much more simple.

Q: Will this mess up my computer?
A: Virtual machines, for all intents and purposes, run independently from your own operating system. If RyonaniXP breaks, no biggie just download it again and it will be good as new. You can copy files in between your OS and RyonaniXP using copy and paste. You can drag files in too but that only seems to work half the time for some odd reason.

It does install two network interfaces on your computer but they aren't used by RyonaniXP so feel free to disable them if you want. You can also use it as a sandbox to test potentially dangerous files.

Installation:

First, download VMWare Player and RyonaniXP.

You can get the latest version from the official site (registration required)
VMware Player: Run Windows 7, Chrome OS - Free Download for a Virtual PC

Run RyonaniXP.exe and extract to a location of your choice.

If you have trouble extracting it:
Installation of VMWare Player is pretty straight forward. I would uncheck "Check for product updates on startup" and "Help improve VMWare Player" as they aren't really necessary. Rest is up to you. After it's finished, it will ask you to restart but it actually isn't necessary.

After installing VMWare Player, if you open the program you should see a window pop up with two panes (assuming it doesn't bug you about updates) . On the left it will say Home and on the right there will be multiple options. Just click Open a Virtual Machine and go to where you extracted the RyonaniXP folder and point it to the .vmx file inside. You should now see it listed on the left pane. Click on it and on the right pane you can click "Play virtual machine" to start it up.

It may ask you whether you "moved it" or "copied it". Say "copied it".

Just give it a bit, experience all the cool custom images I put in there and enjoy when it finishes booting :P

Some handy things:
The machine is supposed to run at 1024x768, mostly just because you rarely need to run at a higher resolution than that. It can go up to 1280x1024 if need be. There are two icons on the desktop to reset the resolution if it gets wonky from resizing the window. Also if you're a neat freak and the icons get strewn about you can right click on My Computer and restore the icon locations.

After thoughts:
I was originally going to make this a video tutorial of sorts but I forgot how loud the highway next to my house is and what a pain in the dick it is to record a voice over where I live. Maybe I'll find the will to do it when I get snowed in one day but I don't think it'll be anytime soon.

Feel free to make suggestions. This is a first release and therefore very likely to have unseen issues that slipped past me so bug reports are also appreciated. If you think it sucks, well just don't use it. It's free.
