Hello everyone. This is kind of a basic topic but also an autistic hyper fixation a deep thought exercise when trying to rationalize what kind equipment an organization would give its combatants based on what it can acquire (in the real world, at least). Personally, I think the type of guns zakos use is a reflection of how they present themselves. Or we can just throw out all reason and just follow the rule of cool.

The first type of weapons that comes to mind are submachine guns: pistol/PDW cartridges generally don't have a lot of recoil compared to intermediate or rifle cartridges, and the gun itself along with the bullets are light enough to make high capacity magazines somewhat viable which enables spray-and-pray tactics. A reasonably well-funded and pragmatic organization would most likely go with some basic options such as the MP5 or MP7 (added bonus since H&K don't really care who they sell to for the most part so long as they're making money). For rag-tag zakos, cheap SMGs that use a telescoping bolt such as the UZI or MAC-10 would fit their image. If they want high-capacity magazines for suppressive fire, possible options include the P90, PP-19, and CS/LS6. If realism isn't really a concern, then the Kriss Vector or Calico have some visually interesting designs. Similar to SMGs, carbines are another option for regular combatants because of their small and lightweight frame, making them easier to handle than full length rifles. Depending on the origins of the zakos, they may use 5.56×45mm guns such as the M4A1 if they're well connected to insider in a government, 7.62×39mm guns such as the AK-47 if they use whatever they can get their hands on, or both such as the Galil ACE.

If the organization has a tiered system for classifying combatants based on skill level, elites may have access to a larger arsenal of more powerful firearms and can choose which one to use. They may choose something like a battle rifle, a shotgun (either pump-action or automatic), or even a light machine gun, and snipers would obviously have access to sniper rifles.

Of course, this assumes that the zakos are fighting as some form of infantry. There's also a lot of stuff I ignored such as what kind of environment zakos are expected to fight in (confined spaces and city streets v.s. wide open fields), their purpose and role (security guards v.s. mechanized infantry), and the level of training they recieve (only knows basic gun safety v.s. basically qualified for Navy SEALs).

I'm interested in hearing your opinions and reasons for using specific guns (I know that for 3D renders, some gun models are chosen based on availability which is understandable). What weapons does your homebrew zakos primarily use and why?

Quite often I imagine scenarios, based on the last zako stuff I have seen. It means, they're armed similarly to the zakos that inspired my imagination. In my own scenarios, they are armed with standardized pistols or machine guns with no spare catridge clips. I prefer to imagine half-naked henchwomen who don't expect to be involved in serious shootouts and don't really care about the lack of ammo. Their weapons must be lightweight and compact, so the zakos could quickly get used to it and don't tire of carrying it. Which types of weapons exactly? It never was important to me.

On one hand I'm so bias because when I make content it's always whatever I can find a decent 3D model on. I extract them from G-Mod, then into Blender, then into Daz. I have a few that I cycle through. A beretta, a P229, a S&W M&P I bought off DAZ3D for like 5 bucks (I think it's just called 9mm handgun but it's def a smith and wesson), The CS: Source Mac 10, the CS Source FAMAS, a collection of Uzis and an AK74 I got off some free 3D model sites. Now that I have those I kind of just reuse them over and over.

On the other hand I'd love to get super specific with it. Because all of my heroines are meant to be female versions of Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell. They get a FN FiveSeven (with a silencer that's just a tube I made in blender lol). Only the heroine gets that gun. Generally the heroes get a mix of US Milspec stuff and snowflake guns from movies/games (like the FiveSeven) and the Zako get street level guns that you could buy from a gun dealer off the street, especially since one of my favorite type of zako is a chubby latina Chola gang member. I'd like to give my chubby guard zako Eastern Bloc weapons like Makarovs, AK74SUs and CZ Scorpians, but I can't find good models on them.

I love the idea of a zako carrying an SMG or PDW. It's such a sloppy weaon. Loud, inaccurate. Love the idea of a zako trying to assassinate the hero and spraying bullets everywhere, getting hit and continuing to fire with her hand on the trigger

I mostly spam the M&P because it has a setting that snaps right into the zakos hand. Saves me a lick of time even if it's not the best option aesthetically. here's an IMFDB style breakdown of my work

Love the idea of a zako ... getting hit and continuing to fire with her hand on the trigger
Oh, that's a great idea!

I would like to add something to my previous post. Imagining weapons that are used against my zakos, I always prefer to think of low caliber guns, so there would be no open skulls after headshots. At the same time, I don't like the idea of a zako, killed by shotgun pellets.

The only weapon that can be used by and against my zakos alike is a Barrett M107. Yes, I'm aware of the caliber. This is a deadly weapon, and a more or less competent henchwoman can be really dangerous with it. But in case she lost a sniper duel, she must be killed with a low caliber sniper rifle, so her head would remain in one piece.

If it is not a relatively competent henchwoman but an ordinary cannon fodder, she can be shot with a Barrett rifle. In this case I imagine that her enemy is a professional sniper who chooses to make certain shot over a headshot and simply puts a bullet in the zako's heart.
