Dang that sucks 😭
Why even bother making it a ā€œstunā€ then rather than a hit stun
I mean, it is a minor thing all in all and maybe is just used in this single part of the game, so maybe they are just cutting corners? It's still a shame, I agree.

Also, don't want to be naggy about it but do you plan to do the Battle Queen stun animations with the remaining characters with Demo 3?

I promise to record it tomorrow, I was busy with work and was sick last week

It's a pity that Aether Gather don't have any debuff animation.

Ack, sorry to hear that, mate. Did you recover well, at the very least?

Yeah, I figured as much when looking through the game. There didn't seem to be any animations for ailments and such.

Out of curiosity, using the program to extract models you can actually search through a game and check what existing animations are there in it?

Say, I know I a may be stepping out of line here, but there's a game called Utawarerumono Zan, which surprisingly does have unique stun animations for characters. The catch is that only bosses can be stunned (since it relies on breaking their stagger gauge 4 times), but you can face playable characters as bossed, unfortunately only one of the girls from the main cast can be fought as a boss. One thing that I've heavily been asking myself since its release is if all the characters have stun animations but simply went unused given only a few can be fought as bosses. Would it be possible to check out?

Cute character design! Does it at least have KO animations? Or are those the usual kind where the character fades away?
I've been a bit busy and the summer heat is kicking in which is uncomfortable. But at some point I do want to take what I've recorded and edit some public clips from Abyssdia. In the meantime I'm keeping up with playing it every day so I can continue to unlock new characters hopefully. I already know I am guaranteed to get Summer Linette when she releases, which should be soon, and I already have Summer Ash, so that's great.

edit:
an account I found in the Arena ladder in Abyssdia
lol

Kind of accident I ended up finding someone who has been doing the stuns though not the sleeps. I may need to ask them about that...
Here is a second set.
And a third set.
Hey, Zaysha's stuff. Good thing. He used to post on this topic a long while ago, but when the thread nearly dead out of inactivity he left and really never came back. Glad to see he hasn't completley abandoned his own channels.
It looks like Zaysha also captured a bunch of dizzy animations from Honkai Stair Rail, four videos in this post here.
There's also this channel who was active for a while and made a couple of animations of some girls.
Yeah! I'd love to share it. I actually also wrapped up a collab fic featuring Pokemon gals in a more hands-on type of combat scenario, looking forward to what the artist does to represent what I've written. It certainly has a part of two that's applicable to this thread lol But my main fic is just a plain earnest YA style story. Though like I said, the prequel has prank-themed ryona-coding to it. And given Nemona’s chronic stamina/health problem, she does end up winded/dizzy now and again. There’s also a planned scene art was made for where she’s struck by a Hypnosis attack to force her to calm down bd shut up. šŸ˜…

Funny you say that because an entire thing in my Pokemon fic is that it's a timeline of SV where the 'player character' is basically a cold-hearted asshole who has goodness buried deep beneath trauma -- yet keeps everything bottled up and takes out their aggression on others, especially their friends, all while childishly clinging to their perception of what is 'cool' and 'strong'. So a big component of the fic is seeing the "NPCs" (who are the main characters here) having to navigate that, having to cope with a reality where their "usefulness" to the 'hero' is long passed and they've been kind of pushed aside.
Yeah, this actually works well. Characters who are complete jerks can work when the story acknowledges they are jerks and works with that in one way or another, instead of glorifying them and playing straight that very juvenile idea of cool you describe your MC has.

Speaking of, isn't the version of Juliana from the Pokemon Special manga essentially kind of a perpetually angry douchebag?
I think that's part of it, but it's a bit short-sighted if you literally think the original creative minds benefit from licking the corporate boots. I mean, as much as I love Nintendo stuff, just look at the way they're actively ERASING the creative people at their company in recent years. Shaving original credits away from remasters, chopping the composer's names off of the Nintendo Music app etc etc. They clearly don't care about the creative people involved in doing all of the work in the sense that they don't want US to pay them any mind. They don't WANT us to know who makes their products, they just want us to blindly think "Nintendo".
Yes, indeed, they corporations and executives are as nasty as they are in the west and even bigger bastards due to how hierarchy just puts them in an untouchable position as people is conditioned to just bow their head to their superiors. This is why I am so confused as to why people over there are so defensive of the interests of companies when even themselves are aware of this and consider it an issue. I can understand if it's a case like piracy actively hurting the sales of creators (which HAS happened), but scenarios where the product just isn't available in a market or no longer means earnings for anybody it just confusing. Crappy as it is to say, there is a subset of people who actually put piracy on the same level as murder and sexual abuse and others that just don't want foreigners meddling with their stuff, but I'm guessing this is just a minority either trolling or being out of touch, just like we have over here.
That's definitely the vibe I've gotten from media like that, taken in context of what I know of Japanese culture.
It's becoming more discussed as of late, especially with topics like bullying, abuse and corruption. Essentially, how the idea of not sticking out and thinking of the community first can be stretched to harmful degrees.
Yeah, it's an alternate universe so it's a balance of capturing the original design/concept while changing some things up to suit the AU. Thanks! I thought the glasses were a good touch for her. Have I shared the recently finished base sprite for Min Min yet...?
She looks nice on them, NGL.

So far we've seen Charlotte, Nemona, the two girls from the artists Webcomic.
Yeah, makes me really appreciate when a game does unique animations/poses for different status ailments. It's very rare. Understandably so, but yeah.
It's a shame when they don't do it and especially disappointing when they cut corners even more and don't use animations at all or reuse the stagger animation. I mean, I agree, it's a very minor thing that only us weirdos care for and the developers obviously have the priorities in just every other place, but dangit if it's not satisfying when they do put good detail in there.
YES, the hair is a huge detail I love to see in this kind of thing, and she's gotten very good at drawing it, and I specifically request details with th hair more than anything else. With Charo I definitely wanted to create a 'cool, tough' vibe in her wrestler form. It's honestly a little out of character compared to her original incarnation, while Alesea is... honestly pretty similar vibes all around. But to compensate, I keep her personality pretty similar, she's just more aggressive in her older, more fist-fighting life here in this AU.
Hair is fricking hard to draw, even when you actually learn to draw proper hairdos and such.

I don't think deviating a bit from the canon is that bad, really. I mean, it's a new setting and putting all of the character's development might not be possible and the story is a new one, so adapting it to fit as best as possible might be the best choice.
She looks pretty different from her FightStar varient, right? That's what she originally looks like in her source material, in 'civvy' form. And that pose is indeed the one you say, it was Unknown12 who chose and commissioned that.
Everything comes together, lol.
Yeah, definiely. I'm hesitant to link to my fic writing profile here but I'm happy to do so in DM.
I also need to get around to recording some clips of FightStar as there's absolutely content that applies to this thread.
Don't worry about it. Just share stuff as you feel comfortable.
Pretty much. I played Black/White 1+2 for the first time just within the last two or three years, AFTER playing all of their full 3D games. And it's frankly the best the series has ever been under GameFreak imo. They clearly did NOT handle the jump to HD/3D well, and it's because they're a cheapskate company that has been skirting by off the lowered expectations of handheld hardware for years now. There's still plenty of creative greatness there but even a lot of THAT is just plain outsourced at this point.
BW and B2W2 were just frickin good.

Another issue I believe that has taken with Pokemon is that due to the brand's popularity the games will always sell incredibly well, which just makes Game Freak do the bare minimum to pump out new entries, since why waste money and resources if it's gonna be a success anyways? I mean, a lot of people love PokƩmon and some people that aren't even into videogames do buy PokƩmon games because they are fans of the franchise. No matter how much talent Gamefreak has, if the resources, time and plans are gutted, it's very little they can do.

Thinking about it, maybe mon franchises in general are a popular interest, if Palworld's success and the new indie games are to go by.
"What about Beast of Reincarnation???"
Oh, you mean a game they basically have OUTSOURCED to an entirely separate development studio who is clearly at least more comptetent at handling the technical stuff than they themselves are? And it's not even OUT yet so we have no idea if it'll even be any good? Yeah, what about it lol
I'll give Beast of Reincarnation a rental and see what I think of it -- I DO think GF still has good creative minds at the heart of it, and clearly some folks who are really trying their best with what they have to work with. But the management is obviously ill-equipped or just plain uncaring to give the games what they deserve. Yes, yes, Pokemon Company expectation blabla, that is for SURE a part of it, but only a PART. Look at other games under the Pokemon banner made by other studios. Pokopia, New Pokemon Snap, Pokken, the Stadium games on the N64... When an experienced dev team that is not GameFreak makes a Pokemon game, they actually put their asses into it, and the results show.
Well, that's a downer. I legit didn't know Beast of Reincarnation was developed by an external team and took it as a good sign that Gamefreak could pull out impressive stuff when they tried, derp.

Kinda like when I found out Pokopia was made by the people who made one of the Dragon Quest spinoffs.
GF COULD have had a different studio work on either the mainline games OR the Legends sub series. But. NOPE. Because that would be leaving heaps of money on the table, I GUESS? So they're split their already incapable studio up to juggle both series at once. We will see how Wind and Waves turns out. Maybe the last 7 years has given them the time to get their shit together and actually put together a team and a workflow that can put out a quality game. And I do NOT just mean the graphics.
I'm not holding my breath, really. The game I thought could show something better was ZA for me after they seemingly took a bit longer to work on it, but nopes.

I'll just wait and see for now.
I'm not expecting it, but I REALLY hope the Ocarina of Time remake is more like the recent RE remakes than just a copy-paste deal like StarFox. I AM excited as hell for StarFox and the new story, I don't even care about OoT that much tbqh. Which is exactly why I want to see them really put their all into a remake that captures the beats of the original while expanding on them. Looking forward to seeing how that turns out. We're gonna get so many places and character in HD... My brain may trouble handling Malon and OoT Zelda/Sheik in modern-looking visuals...
I am excited for OoT myself, given I really liked the original and there was a lot of cut content and unused stuff they could actually use.

Though I agree, Remakes need to justify their existence by providing something different in some way, otherwise the original game should suffice. Better graphics aren't enough. I experienced this first-hand with the Mario RPG Remake, which despite being a solid game, was so similar to the original that I actually dropped it, despite how much I like the game.

Which speaking of is what confused me about the new Star Fox. Like I get starting over given how Zero performed and how Assault was made so long ago and all, but why revisit 64 for a third time? I legit think an original take altogether would have been more interesting. Hopefully the expanded story can make things feel more fresh in that regard.

Speaking of, I wonder what kind of artstyle they will use for OoT. Will it be like Breath of the Wild or will they try something new.
Ouch, my gal with the gall getting ignored lol
Sena is my fav character in the entire Xenoblade series. I also love all six of the mains in XB3. All freaking six of them. Sena is my fav, and Lanz is 2nd, with the others kind of all tying behind them. Some of the guest heroes in your party were pretty great. And the DLC! MAN, Matthew was just the best. And getting to see adult Shulk and Rex was cool as hell. And A? Damn, they're so cute and cool, too. I liked the other two well enough for what roles they served. And the bonus character at the end of the DLC has one of my fav designs in the whole franchise.
I'm honestly so stoked to revisit the games via S2 editions. I only own 3, though.
Nothing against hammer girl, she rocks too, lol.
What status ailments does XB2 even have? I'm willing to give the game a second chance through renting the S2 edition when it releases. I plan to rent XB1 as well just to experience the new content (and heyyyyy maybe try recapturing some animations potentially...?)
When it came to stuff with visible animations I remember topple, being blown into the air, knockback and knockdown, not much else.
Well, I have some Xenosaga stuff, at the least.
Here's Shion from XS1. It's her low HP animation but to me that is often similar to a 'break' or 'dizzy' etc. It certainly looks like she's out of sorts either way.
View attachment 175813 View attachment 175814
Her and KOS-MOS, whose low HP ABSOLUTELY looks like a dazed animation. It's subtle but that suits her android/robot character imo.

View attachment 175815
And Shion's KO. I actually really like this one. It'd be great to see in HD with actual face expression animation.
View attachment 175816
View attachment 175817
Those are all pretty old, but I have a bunch from Xenosaga 3 I captured more recently, includng some at a higher resolution due to some emulation features I figured out (which also make my dusty old computer I use for this stuff very unhappy haha). I'll try to look some of those up for another time.
Amusingly, you can mix the confusion status, which gives circling stars, with the low HP to really create the illusion of a stun animation, especially with Kos-Mos.
Here's one of Rowdy Reiko from Rumbled Roses XX. That game has a cute default dizzy animation but it's the same for every fighter. There ARE some shorter but bespoke animations that can get triggered from a handful of moves, but I'm not familiar enough with the game to know how to do that. I DO have access to the game, however, and would like to try capturing some stuff from it at some point. The dazed animations as well as maybe the canned one they have in a tag team match when they swap out after being exhausted (they slump dramatically over the ropes).
There is a proper animation at least, lol.
View attachment 175818

Here's Pyra's dizzy from Smash Ult, but using this mod that tweaks her outfit. It changes her top to be like. An actual top instead of whatever abomination it is normally. That and adding undergarments to her and Mythra's design already make their designs actually hot to me. I find their original outfits/design to be a BIT offputting tbqh. In context of Smash, though, those tweaks to their outfits combined with their animations for things like dizzy/sleep (not to mention the double language voicelines for both states), damn. My lizard brain seems to like it.
But anyway, here's Pyra's dizzy with a tweaked outfit I recorded some time last year I think.

View attachment 175819

I'll try to record some stuff from Project FightStar soon. I don't wanna record everything in it 'cause I want folks to actually try it out themselves!
Ah, ye good old classic. Weird to say, but it's been already 6 years.

Was very hard to post these in a way that can fit anywhere, the new battle queen girls dizzy
Art style/character design is not my thing, BUT kudos to the designer for all of the custom dizzy animations, complete with unique expressions, too.
As for uploading, you can technically upload stuff to YouTube but mark it as unlisted. Assuming you're not breaking any rules, there should be no issue there? I've never had any of my unlisted videos run into problems, though I've been keeping my channel on the down low after losing my old one, so almost everything is unlisted lol

Will reply to Thief when I have time, but wanted to ask real quick: anyone have a request for GIFs from Abyssdia?
Dizzy, Downed, or KO?
(Downed being the state where they fall down but don't LAY down in full KO state, which effectively is like a 'Low HP' or 'Dazed' type pose)

Give me one character and one of those three, and I can use it as practice editing content from the game. Maybe a backup choice, as well, in case I can't do the first one (I don't have everyone). Whoever is the first to request something I can do, I will look into it.

FUNNY YOU SAY THAT, because the 'player character' in my fic is literally an adaptation of that specific character from the manga.
(right to left)

Scarlet doesn't care.png

She is an absolute edgelord cunt lol
I find it incredibly refreshing and intriguing, since she's very much presented as an antihero.

So I adapted her to my fic into the game's story/setting (the manga is of course an alternate version of events), gave her my own original backstory, etc etc. They (nonbinary) are a reformed criminal who effectively was forced/coerced into doing the whole 'become a Champion' thing in order to erase past wrongdoings, and in turn boost Paldea's PR by various means. Years after SV's story, they're effectively a mercenary, doing all sorts of odd jobs, running tournaments for some extra cash on the side. Very gray, morally questionable, emotionally immature, preoccupied with keeping up walls and focusing on symbiotic relationships with Pokemon as a replacement for actual human connection.

They're full on Shadow the Hedgehog swearing and killing and all that fffff

But on a sidenote, both she and Nemona get knocked out in the manga -- she once and Nemona twice so far.
I think I've shared a couple of Nemona being knocked out and Asleep here, maybe? Or perhaps I'm thinking of my Discord...
In fact, Scarlet is lowkey responsible for Nemona getting knocked out, and instead of helping her, she straight up ABANDONS HER, leaving her passed out in the WILD because "not my problem". So that gives you an idea of what kind of character we're talking about lol Don't even get me started on all kinds of other shit she's pulled in the manga, meanwhile gay-as-hell dope idiot Nemona keeps glomming onto her, it's so toxic and t hurts my brain because Nemona in canon is NOT that stupid. So there's been some catharsis in my fic of having an older version of Nemona processing like, "Oh damn Scarlet treating me like GARBAGE and I just took it" and refusing to take it anymore as a young adult.

ANYWAY! I actually have some fanart that shows Scarlet and Nemona in 'low HP' inspired poses, as well as multiple panels from comics that got made depicting Nemona being Confused/Dizzied, put to Sleep, and Knocked Out. So if there's interest for that and I haven't shared it here yet just let me know and I'll look it up.
I've got a BUNCH of art besides for it but I'm hesitant to post that here publicly, especially when it's more general and not exactly on topic when I've already gone off on tangents. So I'll definitely send that to Thief in DM next time I reply, at least. If I haven't already?

She looks nice on them, NGL.
So far we've seen Charlotte, Nemona, the two girls from the artists Webcomic.
I still need to get around to recording some footage of the game, when I do I'll get the base sprites of all the characters so far.
But so far we've got:
Charo/Alesea (Dame Daffodil)
Nemona/Cassiopeia (Pokemon)
Charlotte/Karlach (Castlevania/Baldur's Gate)
Min Min/ ??? (ARMS, and her companion is not drawn yet but is a Mihoyo character, if you follow my Twitter you maybe can guess who)
Marnie/ ??? (Pokemon, she's actually an antagonist here, and her partner is another Pokemon gal, not drawn yet)

Charo/Alesea/Nemona are the only ones with full implementation so far, though Charlotte has a prologue battle so she has some main mechanics including hitstun/KO
It's understandable to see, sadly, but it does make me appreciate it all the more when a game actually makes that extra effort, like Abyssdia.
Hair is fricking hard to draw, even when you actually learn to draw proper hairdos and such.
Yeah, the artist is great at drawing hair, it's one of the reasons I keep coming back.
I don't think deviating a bit from the canon is that bad, really. I mean, it's a new setting and putting all of the character's development might not be possible and the story is a new one, so adapting it to fit as best as possible might be the best choice.
Exactly, I'm trying to lean into the AU and make changes big and small while still retaining core design elements and character traits. Nemona, for instance, is decidedly dumber in this AU than I actually write her based on canon, and noticeably buffer, but that's the entire idea -- in this universe, her battle obsession was never curbed so she just went all-in on it and became a sort of 'dumb jock' archetype while still retaining core 'feminine' aspects of her character.
Don't worry about it. Just share stuff as you feel comfortable.
I'll definitely send you stuff via DM and anyone who is interested can say so here or via DM and I'll do the same.
BW and B2W2 were just frickin good.
They really were and as someone with ZERO nostalgia for them as I skipped them back in the day, my feeling on this has only increased in the last year or so since having done BW2.
Exactly. They're too big and those in power literally do not give a fuck about quality, they just want shit pumped out. And they can get away with it. Same reason we're seeing GTA6 pulling the shit it is, a $100 game carving out in-game content to justify an $80 price, meanwhile literally making NO Physical version available, AND asking for pre-orders before even showing us wtf the gameplay even looks like, a mere few months before supposed release.
Well, that's a downer. I legit didn't know Beast of Reincarnation was developed by an external team and took it as a good sign that Gamefreak could pull out impressive stuff when they tried, derp.
Yep, I did research on it because I am that pissed at GameFreak/The Pokemon Company, and it's WILD to me that I literally lookd it up, read an interview that ADMITTED GameFreak is a minority developer on the game, saw the official WEBSITE of the ACTUAL developer confirming they are making it, and yet. When I run a search? Cannot even find that developer's name. Even Wikipedia just gaslights into thinking GameFreak is THE developer. When I know for a fact that's not the case. But that's exactly what they want everyone to think, they have been DESPERATE for YEARS to put out something that is not Pokemon, something they own FULL rights of, and every time they try, it's a relative flop. Because, as it turns out, they're jst not as hot shit as they seem to think they are. They've been coasting on brand IP and handheld expectations for like 15 years now.

They outsource the character designs to professional artists, they cut and cut and cute ideas from their own games because they're too damn rushed, they can't even DESIGN their games in ways that feel modern or thought out, let alone the audio/visual presentation, and don't even get me started on the lack of voice acting.

MOVING ON

Kinda like when I found out Pokopia was made by the people who made one of the Dragon Quest spinoffs.
And it's SO GOOD! It's a fantastic use of the IP, it's made by a team who actually CARES, and it SHOWS.
I'm not holding my breath, really. The game I thought could show something better was ZA for me after they seemingly took a bit longer to work on it, but nopes.
NOPE, don't let people gaslight you, ZA is a mediocre game through and through, but it rides on the IP and those dedicated character designs to sell you on it. Swap out the character designs with, say, Digimon, and I guaran-fucking-tee you its Metacritic score would be 15 points lower, it'd have sold 5% of the copies, if even THAT, and nobody would have batted an eye about it.
But it's Pokemon. That's it and that's all.

ZA is not a TERRIBLE game but it's absolutely not what I'd call a GREAT game. It's FINE. It's passable at best and mediocre at worst. It is effectively a GameCube era game in art design and scale and game design, made with modern HD resolution. Which is to say, it IS better than SV as a video game lol But it's like a 6, 6.5 out of 10.

I'll just wait and see for now.
Indeed we shall. I did not buy Scarlet, I did not buy the DLC, I did not buy ZA, absolutely skipped the abysmal looking DLC...
At this point I don't even care about RENTING the next mainline game unless it shows significant improvement.
And despite that honeymoon high, it's much too early to say right now.
I am excited for OoT myself, given I really liked the original and there was a lot of cut content and unused stuff they could actually use.
I'm actually getting more excited as time goes as I think the characters/world have SO MUCH potential to be reborn, but I don't really care about OoT as a game in the modern era. So we'll see on that one, whether it sells me, gets me to just want to rent, or if it's a pass for me. Could go any direction atm, they've literally shown and told us almost nothing. And yet it's releasing within a few months. Supposedly their big holiday game. Boggling.

See, I atcually adored the Mario RPG remake but that's also because the game has by and large been forgotten and ignored for so damn long, never got a remaster or remake, and it had been like 25 years sice its release when they finally remade it. I do admit I wish it got an actual 'Hard Mode' as there WERE some postgame hard bosses that were NEW, but they were modified re-fights of old bosses. It was SOMETHING.
But also, the Mario RPGs hold a special place for me. So does StarFox 64. So in these cases, I actually am very glad to be getting remakes, even if I'd PREFER just straight up new games that are direct followups to the old ones.
I think this was an opportunity to reboot the series and they SHOULD have leaned into that with stronger footing but I bet Zero's failure spooked them too hard. Still, this looks like a fantastic effort, cannot wait to play it myself. And HOPEFULLY this leads to Velan Studios getting to turn it into a proper series.
Speaking of, I wonder what kind of artstyle they will use for OoT. Will it be like Breath of the Wild or will they try something new.
The fact that the game supposedly releases in the next 4 months or something and we don't even know it's ART STYLE, not REALLY, speaks to how confident these companies have goten when they feel don't need to show the customer fuck all until the last second. And sadly, they're right in that notion.
Nothing against hammer girl, she rocks too, lol.
SHE DOES

Well, topple is something! And KOs are a thing, as well. Shame there's not anything else. XB1 has Dizzy and XB3 has Sleep and Bind.
At the very least, I'd like to record higher framerate versions (I'm not actually sure if the Switch 2 capture feature will capture any higher RESOLUTION, which is a shame, and for all I know, it may not even capture a higher framerate, but I THINK it can do up to 60?)
Amusingly, you can mix the confusion status, which gives circling stars, with the low HP to really create the illusion of a stun animation, especially with Kos-Mos.
Oh, yeah? I could see that. I'm the sort who really doesn't give a fuck about the stars or whatever, that's artificial to me. Like it's nice when it's there but I'm more into the actual character's animation/expression.
In XS3 there's Break status which actually sees the character slumped on her knees, essentially, trying to shake off dizziness. I actually REALLY like KosMos' in that, so remind me to look up my recorded GIFs and post those next time.
Ah, ye good old classic. Weird to say, but it's been already 6 years.
It's been SEVEN AND A HALF since the base game, and yeah, over 6 since it ended DLC. I am STARVING for them to just Switch 2 Edition the thing. I don't even need new characters, just give us more single player content, refresh the online ideally (like seriously GET RID of GSP PLEASE). But I sure wouldn't say 'no' to new fighters, OR new stages. I'd personally rather they just add more to Smash Ult than reboot the franchise, and I think that's the much easier call, but it's Nintendo, so you really never know.

I'd also be happy to see the series get reborn in a new style/subgenre. But I'd PREFER they just further refine Smash Ultimate first.
anyone have a request for GIFs from Abyssdia?
Dizzy, Downed, or KO?
(Downed being the state where they fall down but don't LAY down in full KO state, which effectively is like a 'Low HP' or 'Dazed' type pose)

Give me one character and one of those three, and I can use it as practice editing content from the game. Maybe a backup choice, as well, in case I can't do the first one (I don't have everyone). Whoever is the first to request something I can do, I will look into it.
Any takers for this?

Here's the character list so far.
