Karma is awarded to you by other users for posts they particularly like, by using the Applaud link under their karma rating in a particular post. It can be similarly taken away by using Smite on really bad posts. It's a vague measure of how much people are contributing to SDT - if someone satisfactorily fills a request for you, you might give them karma for it.
It's a pretty common thing to see on forums and similar sites, although SDTMods has much lower karma shifts up or down than something like Reddit, due to the much smaller (and more lurk-prone) community.
