X-Men Mutant Academy 2 [Playstation]
Note : Since this game came out before the X-Men movies, it is based on the comic versions of the characters.

Published : 2001
Genre : Fighting
Ryona rating : 2/5

Ryona:
  • Five distinctive female fighters out of a roster of eighteen.
  • Characters are Superheroines/heroes and villains with mutant powers like mastery of electricity or magnetism, telekinesis, telepathy, optical or solar blasts etc. Four characters can even fly.
  • Very colorful game with lots of effects for hits/special moves.
  • Each character has three Super bars. When any of them is full they can execute Super Moves (or Super Combos) ; each of these bars corresponds to a different Super Move.
  • Elaborate combo system with some emphasis on aerial juggling.
  • Certain moves can send your opponent flying either towards the air or the edge of the screen, although the animation for this is quite stiff.
  • Each character has at least three grabs, some of which are portrayed cinematically. Unfortunately they are mostly unimaginative and are often ended very abruptly. For example, one of Storm's grabs has her place her opponent in a backbreaking position and holding her there until she summons a lightning on her, but as soon as the lightning appears her opponent is already halfway across the screen.

Female Characters:
  • Phoenix is one of the original X-Men and one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet. Most of her grabs and supers have her hit/shoot her opponent with telekinesis from a distance. She also has the ability to fly.
  • Storm is one of the most iconic X-Men, being very strong-willed and having served as their leader very often. She wields the power to control weather, which in the game is translated into manipulation of lightning and air currents, which also give her the ability to fly.
  • Psylocke is a British woman inhabiting an Asian assassin's body. Her abilities include telepathy and telekinesis (via the form of what she calls a Psychic Knife) but she is also a trained martial artist wielding some very technical kicks.
  • Rogue was an evil mutant who has since turned into a heroine. She has the ability to absorb her enemies' powers via a kiss (unfortunately the move is portrayed badly as she doesn't even touch her opponent's lips during the kiss) and then use them against them. She once spent too much time absorbing another heroine's superpowers and has now obtained them permanently, giving her super strength (leading to some painful punch combos) and the ability to fly.
  • Mystique is an evil mutant and Rogue's surrogate mother ; she also has blue skin. In the comics she has the ability to morph into any person she wishes, but in the game she instead uses a heavy ray gun for attacking, either by firing it or smashing it on her opponents.
