Platform: SNES.
Published: December 29, 1993 (Japan, Translated in 2002 by Fusoya's Niche and Masamune Translations).
Genre: Beat'em up.
Ryona Rating: 3/5.

This is the second Beat'em up based on the successful franchise by Naoko Takeuchi. And this game introduced me to the Ryona world along with Streets of Rage. Sadly, there was only one other Beat'em up (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, for the Arcade), and that was the end of the best Beat'em ups based on Manga/Anime Franchises for a long time.

Back to the game: the sprites were more detailed that the earlier SNES (and SMD) version, adding more moves for each character (and added one more character, Chibi-usa (Rini for the English-speakers)) and a new ending for beating the game on the hardest difficulty. Additional to the life-draining desperation attack, the player can charge a proyectile attack and also has a number of "Bombs" (unavailable on two player mode) that take one lifebar of all the enemies in the area (in Hard, don't know about the other difficulties or bosses). There's also a versus mode like Streets of Rage II.

Ryona (apart from the obvious Zako, names were taken from wikimoon.org):

  • Furaiki enemy (black and red versions), can attack player with fire and lighting, doing increased damage and triggering special damage animations.
  • Dumble enemy (green and red versions), can grab player and damage (squeeze? rape?) her repeteadly.
  • Saphir (Black Moon Clan second boss), can lift player and toss her to the floor.
  • Jamanen (gelatinous women, gold and silver versions), can grab player and squeeze (another rape? boob rape?) her three times.
  • Rubeus (Black Moon Clan third boss), can grab player and throw her to the other side (this move takes half of a lifebar on Hard!).

Female Characters:

  • Each one of the Sailor Senshi (Scouts for the English-speakers) uses different maneuvers to fight the Black Moon Clan: Sailor Moon has average stats and she's a popular choice for beginners. Her desperation attack is a Spinning Uppercut and her Bomb attack is Moon Princess Halation (my third favorite Senshi).
  • Sailor Mercury is pretty fast, but her 6-hit combo can leave her defenseless against a crowd of enemies. Her desperation attack is a Handstand Spinning Kick and her Bomb is Shine Aqua Illusion (my FAVORITE Senshi!)
  • Sailor Mars suffers from a poor aerial attack, but her desperation attack covers a great zone and she has decent strength. Her desperation attack is a Handstand Spiral Kick and her Bomb is Burning Mandala.
  • Sailor Jupiter is strong, and can bring down the bosses quicker than other Senshi, but she suffers from poor speed. Her desperation attack is a Pirouette Kick and her Bomb is Sparkling Wide Pressure (my second favorite Senshi).
  • Sailor Venus is like another Sailor Moon: balanced, but she has good ranged attacks, although she, like Sailor Mars, doesn't have a very good jumping attack. Her desperation attack is a Chain Spin Attack and her bomb is Crescent Beam Shower.
  • Chibi-usa is a "kid-mode" (no pun intended) character, most of the enemies cannot hit her and her attacks are low too. There's a secret code that lets you play as another Senshi along with Chibi-usa (or two Chibi-usa). Her desperation attack is a Umbrella-standing Spin Kick and her Bomb is Luna-P Attack.

It's a shame that there weren't more of these licensed Beat'em ups...a game like this of...in example, Dirty Pair, would have been AWESOME.

"Dumble enemy (green and red versions), can grab player and damage (squeeze? rape?) her repeteadly."

Since the monster's base is wrestler, I assume that it's bearhug.

Well, the sprite isn't very clear on this move, and it's a common problem with these 2D sprites, but it also leaves most of the action to our imagination (although it doesn't help the fact that I didn'd saw the anime or the manga after...15 years?).

Though the manga has some violent and sex scenes, they are in drama ways. So outright rape or boob squeeze are unlikely lol.
