The continent of Rigel is a land as ancient as it is deadly and dangerous. Sprawling human kingdoms cover much of the landscape, ruled by power hungry tyrants and nobles who have no qualm with sacrificing the lives of their expendable subjects to achieve their goals. In the shadows, powerful criminal syndicates deal in blood and treat human life with little to no value. Powerful wizards and sorceresses rule over evil cults seeking to increase their power, and mercenaries with little scruple kill whoever or whatever stands in their way for their next payment. Rigel is a wretched place with an even further wretched populace, where the only way to lead a fruitful life is to have been born into nobility.
Those wishing to escape a life of meager peasantry often try and become adventurers. With dreams of gold and glory in hand, these adventurers set out into the world. They defend the common-folk, fight against bandits and monsters, and make a name for themselves in a world full of bloodshed and misery. While many adventurers fail, some go on to accomplish great deeds, and tales of their heroism reach across tavern to tavern, inspiring all who hear them.
Unfortunately, you are not one of these heroes.
You are scum. An expendable tool to be used by your superiors. If you die, none will mourn or remember you. At best, you'll be thrown into a body pile and buried in a mass grave before the animals get to you. At worst, you'll encounter one Rigel's numerous deadly monsters, and end up as a quick meal.
One day, while you were in the town of Kafra, which borders the sacred Elven Forest, the Dread Sorceress Toxin appeared. You'd heard stories of her. A beautiful, powerful and yet very evil High Mage with mastery of ancient and deadly shadow magics. In a mere afternoon Toxin had single-handedly conquered your town. The power she displayed was beyond your comprehension, and while you expected to be killed by her magics, she gave you and the other citizens an ultimatum.
Toxin would be heading into the sacred Elven Forest to steal a powerful magical artifact. Most humans had little interaction with Elves, as the two races generally hated each other. Toxin planned to defile the forest, murder its Elven population, and plunder all of the gold and magical artifacts she could. To those who joined her and followed her bidding, she promised untold riches and fortune. The freedom to live like kings for the first time, and even the possibility of stealing for themselves one of the beautiful Elven women they'd heard legends about but had never seen. For those who refused to join her, they'd be conscripted into her bidding anyway. Magically bound to either obey Toxin or have their souls stolen.
Toxin managed to amass a large army that day. After witnessing just how powerful the Sorceress was, few dared to refuse her. And many felt safe and confident behind her power. With such a powerful mage backing them up, how could they lose against the elves? They'd make short work of their villages, and by the end of the campaign they'd all be filthy rich.
What could go wrong?
What is this?
I've shamelessly stolen this idea from Kayfabe (So you want to be a zako? ) because I had a lot of fun with it last year and wanted to continue! In his own words, this is part RP, part lottery. You've joined the Dread Sorceress Toxin's army. Whether you joined her willingly to gather wealth and power, or whether you've been conscripted against your will, you're now a full-fledged soldier in her army.
Create a Zako character, emphasis on Zako. You're not the hero of this story, but an expendable asset to be used by Toxin. Were you a Peasant? A Bandit? A Mercenary? Give your Zako a backstory and describe how they look. Your Zako will be part of Toxin's army and will go on various missions that I will create throughout the Elven forest. The ultimate goal is to capture the mysterious ancient artifact that Toxin is after in the Elven capital. Survival will be completely random, and be based on dice rolls as well as choices your Zako makes. Some of these choices will be individual, and other times you'll vote as a group.
RP is greatly encouraged in between missions!
The important thing to remember is as a Zako, your chances at survival are slim. You're basically going to the Elf version of Vietnam. So I encourage you to make multiple characters!
How it Works:
Create a Zako, describe how it looks (you can use Kisekae or a stock picture as well), create a backstory and choose a class from below. Your Zako will go on various missions throughout the forest. Whether the mission is a success or a failure, there is a good chance there will be casualties, so multiple characters are encouraged. The more your Zako survives, the more experience they'll gain and the greater (though not that great) their chances at survival will become. I'll run a mission every day or so, and a status screen with current active Zako.
Missions will vary based on which Zako are present and the class structure. Too many of one particular class may be a bad idea!
Classes:
Soldier: Average to below average fighters with little to no remarkable ability. These soldiers make up the bulk of the Toxin's army. While some are mercenaries with prior combat experience, many are conscripted peasants or citizenry who have never held a weapon with their life. They're slightly more durable than your average Zako as they have access to armor, and with enough training can become warriors of decent prowess. If you're a soldier, state what weapon you are using.
Archer: Ranged fighters, archers fight from a *slightly* safer distance, not seeing as much direct combat as their soldier counterparts. While most of the Archers in Toxin's army are untrained and rely on raw volley power, with enough training, they can become decent shots.
Rogues: Mostly made up of former thieves and bandits, rogues are more agile and lightly armored than soldiers, meaning they can't take as much punishment. They can be great for sneaking up on an enemy and hitting some vital weak spots. Rogues can become decent Assassin's with enough experience.
Mages: Very few in Rigel have the natural talent for Magic, so Mages are a vital necessity in any army. Their magic power can shred through most defenses, however they aren't that durable. Mages start off with a basic Fireball spell, however they can receive access to greater spells as they gain experience.
Clerics: Clerics have access to healing spells and serve as a support staff in any army. While they generally lack offensive ability, a cleric can be the difference between life and death, though they aren't miracle workers. Clerics can heal greater wounds with further experience
When do we start?!
You can start right now! Create a Zako and get to work! I'll create the first mission after we have a decent number of characters. For those who wish to RP with your characters right away, Toxin's army is currently mustering their forces in the city of Kafra before they head out into the forest!
