I've noticed that the girls from Symphogear have gone completely unnoticed! I'm hoping someone would be awesome enough to try and tackle some of these girls! Extra props if someone actually manages to do Carol!

Minor quibble: please provide full character names in a Request thread. There are many "Hibiki"s out there, so "Tachibana Hibiki" is slightly more convenient for people who visit your thread.

Apart from that - good work, nice descriptions, useful reference images.

Extra props if someone actually manages to do Carol!
It's technically feasible, but it wouldn't be an effective use of modding resources
  • most of the interesting details are on the left side of the body - the background side. The braid would be mostly hidden from the player.
  • the braid reaches the ankle when the girl is standing. When she kneels down, it will brush the floor.
    • the hair physics system can handle this, but it tends to look undignified.
    • the excess hair will lie folded/coiled along the floor ... but it will be behind the left leg. It will be mostly hidden from the player.
  • the anatomical constraint on the left shoulder is achievable, but it requires a lot of effort and fine-tuning

The Tsubasa, Chris, and Maria designs are a bit too "anime" for my taste. They're distinctive, but they wouldn't be fun to animate because the resting shapes lack physicality. You're forced to include a high stiffness coefficient in order to ensure that the hair will retain its shape. When the girl moves around, her hair responds sluggishly. The overall effect isn't pleasant or convincing.

If you can trace the non-bandaged Kirika hairstyle (which may require a higher-resolution reference image) then I'll convert it to a SWF mod and add a few animation details.

This, at least, could be solved by mirroring the import, and then loading it together with my mirror mode loader mod. That does require the loader, however.

Here's better detailed picture of Kirika. I wasn't able to remove the bar from the web player, but it's translucent, so it shouldn't require too much effort to add the small tip to the bottom of the hair

That's true. The "braid is on the wrong side" thing was mostly just an excuse. The Carol hairstyle is simply too much work to implement properly (with physics constraints and fancy layering) and it would look silly as a simple PNG (because it's too long and it wraps too closely around the body). We could complete five or six normal hairstyles in the time needed to do this one properly.

The bar is not a problem. Please remember to host your images offsite instead of attaching them to your posts. I've rehosted this one to imgur.

More importantly, though: I'm asking you to trace it. Inkscape is free and you can find various tutorials for vector tracing (on the Tutorials board, or via a Google search). If you run into problems then there are many people here who can offer assistance.

Tracing is not especially difficult, but it is somewhat tedious. I'm asking you to do it for several reasons:
  • it needs to be done before the hairstyle can be animated
    • I don't want to trace it myself (because I'm busy and also lazy)
  • the Kirika hairstyle is simple enough to be documented as a tutorial, but long enough to demonstrate a few animation techniques
  • I want to encourage people to get involved with modding and learn new skills
    • vector tracing is an easy place to start

Nicely done. The shapes and colors are accurate, and you've maintained a reasonable number of layers.

It's going to take me a while to clean up the file before I can begin working on it. Explanation:

If you zoom in, you'll notice that there are whitespace gaps between most of the adjacent lines and fills. This isn't appropriate. Vector graphics allow us to create shapes with "perfect" boundaries -- shapes which show no flaws regardless of how far we zoom in.

I'm not just being hyper-critical here. Most of the fills in the hairstyle actually consist of 3-4 separate fills. If we used the SVG as-is, then the hairstyle would have a significant performance impact on SDT gameplay. Adding dynamic animation to a hairstyle always worsens its performance, so it's important to start from an "optimized" set of vectors.

I'd suggest that you review your approach with a veteran SDT modder before you begin another tracing project. It's quite possible that the mistake which is generating the weird boundaries also involves extra work for you. We can probably streamline your working process - allowing you to create optimized vectors in a single pass (without the need for subsequent review/cleanup work).

It's setup with six independent strands at the moment. I haven't yet decided whether it's worthwhile to animate the top hair and cowlick. The nape hair would be easy to animate but it's so short that the effect would be barely noticeable; it's probably not worth the FPS cost.

The reflection/glare band is currently just pasted on top of everything else. I'll incorporate it more elegantly later on, so that the black outline of each hair strand is drawn above the reflection while the color fills are beneath it.

The initial files have been released: static dynamic. Updates can be provided if you find any major compatibility problems or layering issues.

The other hairstyles don't appeal to me, so I don't expect to work on them. Other artists and modders are free to tackle the remaining girls.

I'm going to amend this idea slightly: I still don't want to animate these hairstyles, but if you can trace the vectors for any of the remaining ones then I'll create a static SWF file (it's a very straightforward task which takes five minutes at most).

Let me know if you're interested, but please don't begin work right away. I think that I can identify the mistake which created the whitespace errors in the Kirika SVG, and we'll want to resolve that before you sink any more time into this project.
