Part III of my "What If Sonya Blade Was The Main Character Of The 1995 Mortal Kombat Movie" project. (still working on the name!)

----------

Sonya approached the beach. It was time for her next fight in the Mortal Kombat Tournament on Shang Tsung's Island. Her last fight was against a yellow clad ninja who apparently liked to hang out in a place that seemed very much like Hell. He had teleported both himself and Sonya to that place, and she damn near lost the fight after he ripped his skin off around his head and started breathing fire. She managed to beat the demon/ninja thing, only to be left stranded in a field of bony corpses. She came across a bald man with pure white skin and black tattoos, either by luck or something else, and he had sent her back to the island. He was aware of the Mortal Kombat tournament, and seemed eager to send her back.

Her day started out pretty good. She had found her partner's killer and ended his life. But after literally going to Hell and back, she was a bit more cautious than she usually was. There was no telling what was going to happen next on this nightmare island. Apparently Liu Kang, the one everyone thought was going to win the tournament and save everyone, had completely disappeared. Either he ran away like a coward, or was taken out between fights. She wouldn't put it past Shang Tsung to send out assassins. So now it was up to Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage to win the tournament. Sonya didn't bet on that lousy actor making it much farther, so she would just keep fighting until she beat everyone. It was as simple as that.

Still wearing her black tank top, shorts, and boots, she entered the "ring" which was nothing more than large red flags on tall wooden flagpoles arranged in a circle in the sand next to the water. Three hooded guards stood watch over the ring, with each one carrying a long pole-axe weapon. Shang Tsung himself was seated in a chair overlooking the ring, and when Sonya approached, he stood up. She looked at him and waited for him to speak, but instead he just pointed behind her. Sonya tensed up, dreading what kind of creature her next opponent would be. There was still the four armed guy to worry about. She hoped it wasn't going to be him, she wasn't ready for that yet.

To Sonya's surprise and relief, her opponent was an unassuming looking woman. Dressed in black pants, black boots, a navy blue corset, and black arm guards. Her long brown hair was braided and hanging behind her back. If this was the same woman she had heard about before, then this was Kitana. Though she looked to be about thirty, she was apparently over one thousand years old and the princess of some other dimension or whatever. Sonya would have to watch herself against this one.

Still, she didn't look that strong.

Kitana bowed to Sonya, so she did the same. Then Kitana went into a fighter's stance, and Sonya did the same. Then Kitana started attacking, so Sonya did the same.

The two punched and chopped at each other, though neither made much headway. Then somehow Sonya got her arm trapped in a hold. Kitana grabbed Sonya's arm and forced her down on one knee. Kitana had one hand wrapped around Sonya's wrist, and her forearm was pressed up against her shoulder. Great, she thought to herself, the fight just started and I'm about to get my arm broken!

Sonya closed her eyes and braced herself for the break, but instead, her opponent loosened her grip and spoke to her.

"If you won't fight with all of your heart, there is no hope."

"...What?"

Sonya was confused, but she quickly took advantage of her opponent's apparent desire to help her. She grabbed ahold of Kitana's arm and threw her over her shoulder. Kitana cartwheeled to keep from falling to the ground. Then she retaliated with a few kicks that Sonya easily blocked. She could tell that Kitana was good, but she got the feeling that she was holding back. Sonya wouldn't give her the same treatment.

Sonya threw a punch at Kitana, but she twirled out of the way, grabbed her arm, and brought her down again on one knee.

"To win your next match, use the element that brings life."

"What the hell are you on about?"

"Kitana!" Shang Tsung yelled. They both looked back at the angry sorcerer. He seemed very displeased with Kitana. To be fair, Sonya was as well. She came for a fight, not a friendly sparring match or a lecture.

Sonya spun out of the hold she was in, and went in hard. She wrapped her arms around Kitana's waist and hip tossed her to the ground. Then she pulled Kitana's arm behind her back, putting her in the position that Kitana had put her in.

"Remember my words."

"Shut the fuck up!"

Sonya yanked back hard on Kitana's arm to try to break it, but Kitana wriggled her way out of her grasp. The two got back up to their feet and stared each other down.

"I don't need or want your help!"

Kitana sighed. She glanced back at Shang Tsung, then back to Sonya. In a quiet voice, she said to Sonya, "Very well. I thought maybe you would be the one. Perhaps the actor..."

Sonya was done listening to this crazy woman. She threw several punches towards Kitana's midsection, but again got countered. Once again she found herself on one knee with her arm in a hold. Instead of giving Sonya cryptic advice, Kitana yanked back hard and broke Sonya's arm.

"AAAAH!"

"Stupid bitch!" Sonya spat out. "I'll kill you!"

Kitana wasn't going to give Sonya the chance. Kitana grabbed Sonya's other arm and yanked back on that one as well.

CRACK! "AHHHHHH!!!"

Though she looked human, Kitana was Edenian. Her strength was much stronger than that of a normal human from Earthrealm. This was something Sonya was learning first hand. Unfortunately, she wouldn't live long enough to do anything with that knowledge.

Kitana put her hands on either side of Sonya's head.

"I'm sorry for this."

Sonya, defiant right up to the end, replied, "Go to hell."

CRACKKK!

Kitana twisted Sonya's head harshly to the side, snapping her neck and killing her. Sonya's head bobbled around her neck as she fell to the sand.

"Kitana wins. Flawless victory."

The Edenian looked back at Shang Tsung. She smiled politely at him, then turned to leave the beach. Her smile faded fast and turned to a scowl. Kitana needed to find a way to beat Shang Tsung quickly, Earthrealm was running out of warriors.

Sonya was shocked at how effortlessly Kitana had just pulled her arm out of its socket. Her strength was inhuman! She needed to think of something fast.

"Wait!" she said, as Kitana grabbed her other arm. "Element that brings life? What was that supposed to mean?"

Sonya felt the grip on her arm loosen slightly. She quickly pulled her arm free, scooped up some sand from the ground, and threw it back into Kitana's eyes. She stepped back and tried to wipe the sand away, and as she opened her eyes, she saw the bottom of Sonya's boot right in front of her face.

BAM!

Finally, Sonya landed a solid blow on her mysterious female opponent. Kitana stepped back again, this time holding her nose which was now bleeding. Sonya smirked. "So, you bleed. Then you can die!"

Sonya threw a few knee strikes into Kitana's stomach. After the third one, Kitana grabbed Sonya's bare leg and twisted, throwing her to the ground. Sonya fell on her back. Apparently, Kitana used a similar strategy against Sonya that she had used against her, because when she got her bearings, she saw a boot coming at her face.

Sonya was too slow to react. Kitana's boot slammed into her face and knocked her out.

Kitana looked down at her beaten opponent and sighed. "Perhaps you weren't as strong as I thought. I had hoped for more from you."

Kitana started to leave, but stopped when she heard a voice behind her call her name.

"Kitana!" Shang Tsung said as he stood up from his chair.

Kitana turned around. "Yes?"

"You are not done here. Finish her!"

The Edenian sighed again. She looked down at Sonya and felt sad, but she wouldn't dare defy Shang Tsung. She walked over to one of the flag poles and yanked it out of the ground. The bottom of the pole was a very long and thin spike. She carried the pole over to her fallen opponent, and drove the spike into her stomach. The spike impaled Sonya all the way through and stuck firmly in the ground.

Sonya awoke screaming. She looked at the flag pole sticking out of her stomach in confusion and terror. She tried to crawl away, but that only intensified the pain, as she couldn't move without making the hole in her stomach even bigger. She grabbed the pole with both hands and tried to pull it out of her, but it wasn't budging. Not one bit. She let her arms fall to the ground, and she lay in the sand, bleeding out and sobbing in pain. Occasionally she would scream again.

Kitana felt pity for the woman. She expected her to die quicker than this, but she was hanging on. So she walked over to another pole and yanked it out of the ground.

Sonya opened her mouth to scream out in pain again, but instead Kitana drove the pole into her mouth. The spike went into her mouth and out the back of her head into the ground. Sonya's eyes went wide, and she gagged for a few seconds before finally falling still with the look of shock stuck on her face. Kitana looked at Shang Tsung. "Satisfied?"

The evil sorcerer smiled. "Fatality."

She rolled out of the way at the last second, only to be kicked in her side. Sonya went rolling towards the water. She tried to stand up but was kicked again. Kitana's kicks were surprisingly powerful. After one last kick, Sonya rolled into the ocean. Kitana wasted no time and jumped on top of Sonya. She grabbed the back of Sonya's head and thrust it under the water.

"Gblbl! Mmnnnph!"

Sonya's arms and legs flailed around in an attempt to throw her opponent off of her, but Kitana wouldn't budge. She kept Sonya's head held under the water. Over the course of the next thirty seconds, Sonya's flailing got more wild and violent. After a minute, they slowed down significantly, and after a minute-thirty they stopped completely. Her body contracted in on itself over and over, trying to get air, but she sucked in nothing but water. Kitana kept holding Sonya's head under the water for another full minute, just to be sure of her victory. Finally she let go and stood up, looking down at Sonya's lifeless body floating face-down in the ocean.

"Kitana wins. Congratulations, my dear."

Kitana left the beach without looking back. After taking several steps, she heard him sloshing around in the water. Then she heard those dreaded words that gave her shivers every time she heard them.

"Your soul is mine!"

She hated when he did that.

Sonya twisted and turned with all her might, and managed to throw Kitana off of her back. The two rolled around in the water, and Sonya ended up on top. She held Kitana's head under water for about thirty seconds before she went still. She stood up, satisfied that she had won another fight. She looked down at her lifeless opponent floating in the water, then got back on the sand. She shook her limbs in an attempt to dry herself off. She undid her ponytail and shook her wet hair around. Then she looked up to the sorcerer.

"You gonna declare me the winner or what?"

Shang Tsung smiled and stood up, then pointed behind Sonya, like he did at the start of the match. Sonya turned around as was met with a fist to the face.

Kitana had faked being drowned! Edenian's had much greater lung capacity than humans. A lesson Sonya learned too late to save her nose, which was now broken and bleeding profusely.

Sonya's stomach was met with several hard punches, then Kitana moved up to her face. Punch after punch, Sonya's head was thrown to the left and to the right. Her arms swung to the side with each powerful hit. Kitana beat Sonya down until she was dazed. She swayed back and forth on her feet.

"Guess it's time to finish you."

Kitana reached behind her and pulled out her signature weapons: her metal fans. She unfolded one of her fans and chucked it at Sonya's chest.

SPLICK! "GYAAAHHHH!"

The fan embedded itself in Sonya's chest. She weakly tried to grasp at it, but in her weakened state she couldn't do anything about it. She sank down to her knees and resigned herself to her fate. She was finished and she knew it. Her arms hanged limply at her sides, brushing against her bare thighs, her head bobbled back and forth in an attempt to stay conscious. Kitana grabbed a wad of Sonya's hair and pulled her head back, exposing her neck.

"I didn't want this."

Kitana took her second fan, which was still unfolded, and jabbed it upwards into Sonya's neck so that it went all the way up into her head. Sonya's mouth clamped shut. Blood filled her mouth and trickled down her lips. Her wide eyes rolled back into her head as her arms twitched involuntarily. Then suddenly, the fan unfolded and opened itself up inside of Sonya's head. The fan separated Sonya's face from the back of her head. It slowly slid off the fan and crumbled onto the sand. Kitana removed both of her fans from Sonya's body as it fell forwards. Her arms continued to twitch for several more seconds before everything went completely still. Her faceless head hit the ground, spilling out copious amounts of blood into the sand.

Shang Tsung smiled and stood up from his chair, clapping softly. "Well done. Fatality."

Kitana resisted the urge to chuck her fans at the sorcerer. She knew it would do her no good, so she continued biding her time. Hopefully Johnny Cage would be a more promising warrior than this worthless blonde woman.

Something inside of Sonya awoke at those words. Her eyes focused, and she saw a metal fan spinning and heading right for her chest. She sidestepped just in time, and the fan embedded itself into one of the guards' chest. His pole-axe dropped to the ground as the guard was clutching at his chest. The two other guards looked at him, then looked back to the fight. The wounded guard was able to tear the fan out of his chest just before he fell over dead, which caused him to re-impale himself with the fan.

Sonya watched this happen, then got an idea. Kitana charged at Sonya and tried to high kick at her head, but Sonya backflipped and landed right by the pole-axe. Kitana charged at her again with her second unfolded fan in her hand held out like a dagger, but her eyes grew wide as she felt a terrible pain in her stomach.

Sonya had grabbed the pole-axe and held it out in front of her. Kitana did the rest by essentially impaling herself.

"1000 years, and you fell for that?"

Sonya ripped the pointed end of the pole-axe out of Kitana's stomach. Blood sprayed out on the sand as she sank to her knees. Sonya kicked Kitana in the center of her face, causing her to fall backwards on her back. Kitana lay in the sand in shock at her loss and the pain. Then she smiled weakly, and softly said to herself, "Earthrealm has a chance. She might be able to beat Sha..."

SCHUNK!

"GGLLLCKKKK!"

Sonya brought the bladed edge of the pole-axe down across Kitana's neck and decapitated her. Kitana's body flopped violently once then went still. Sonya lifted up Kitana's head by the hair and looked at her face. Her eyes were looking in two different directions, her mouth was hanging open and her tongue was sticking out stupidly. Blood dripped out of her nose, mouth, and neck. Sonya looked to Shang Tsung and tossed Kitana's head his way. It rolled in the sand and came to a rest at his feet.

Sonya wiped blood from her nose, which was still bleeding, and asked, "Who's next?"

Just letting you know, your stories are pretty much why I signed up for the forum. Keep up the great work, and looking forward to more of Sonya's triumphs (and failures) against Sub-Zero and Goro!
