Hopefully I've grabbed decent pics as outlined in the reference guide.
Taken from Requesting Rules PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING A REQUEST:
Take some time to read carefuly the requesting rules and the linked post.
According to this: "The one obvious exception is when someone makes a Request for a photorealistic hair mod. In this case, a side-view photograph is the only possible reference image; anime images are neither necessary nor useful."
I thought these were decent side view pictures. Do I need to specify photorealistic hair mod in the request?
The most important thing is that none of the people that use to do hair mods on this forum do them with photographs (as far as I know).
So if you want to have a chance to see your request fullfilled, I advise you to find some anime type references.
If you want to get an hair mod from these photographs, you can do it easily with a raster graphic editor that allows an alpha channel and layers (like paint.net). You have to remove everything but the hair with the magic wand, then paste and resize the result in an empty layer at the right place. This template (that should be put in another layer that will be removed after) will show you the position where the hair should be:
Spoiler: PNG blank template
After the hair is well positioned and resized, you only have to save the hair mod as a PNG file.
Okay. Thanks for the info :-)
Maybe this one will work?
Find good references on the web (i.e. not only 5 minutes on Google Images. Places to look and more info: Reference Shot Guide).
Side-view is essential: almost nothing can be done if the hair or costume is not shown exactly from the side (i.e. 90°)
Anime-style is essential: it means two or three colours (base, shadow, light reflection) with no or very simple gradients. Photographs, 3D game screenshots, digital "waterpainting" pictures, etc. have colour gradients very difficult to reproduce.
High resolution is essential: very pixelated refs makes drawing small parts quite difficult (find PNG or JPG images, not GIF or BMP).
Take some time to read carefully the main Requesting Rules also if you haven't done it already.
If you cannot find anything better, then your request is very unlikely to be fullfilled.
I spent hours trying to find a decent image. I visited every site listed on the Reference Shot Guide. I tried googling fan art, anime, etc. A decent reference probably doesn't exist. Do you know if anyone accepts requests that don't need a reference? I have seen such characters done such as Abby Sciuto (NCIS girls) and various other characters that I'm pretty sure do not have a reference shot to go buy. I'm assuming these are artists than can make their own. I do appreciate your feedback here at the forum
If you are talking about @TOlive's Abby Sciuto, you'd better ask its author directly, but he hasn't contributed for a long time and he was last seen on the forum more than three months ago.
Concerning modders making hair mods out of nothing but low quality photographs, you can see by yourself that there is none around: no one proposed to fullfill your request.
You can try to make an hair mod by yourself, using the last photographic ref of your first post using the technique I describe in my tutorial (link in signature). But seeing the quality of the ref, I can already tell it will not look good, because the hair is too dark and the strands cannot be distinguished one from another.
Do not try to use the drawn ref: as it is not perfect 90° side view, you won't be able to fit the hair to SDT girl's head.
Life person much harder. Less interest when not very famous too. When I previous make request for live person I try find hair style name then I search anime image of similar type. Do not give up and keep trying to find. Photo is hard but maybe some image of other character can be use.
For inspire I try search hair bun and profile into booru
Thanks for the replies
