I just realized that if the next-gen consoles are really powerful.... (1 Viewer)

and if developers (especially Japanese devs) can keep up with the technology, videogame Ryona is gonna look RIDICULOUSLY good. The current generation of consoles brought us highly detailed female characters, facial expressions, torn clothing and just overall really realistic and sexy looking women. It was a real big improvement from PS2 to PS3/360, especially if you look at games like Resident Evil and Soul Calibur.

But just imagine how freaking amazing they'll look if next gen delivers. Could renders like this be the norm?

If yes, count me in!

I'd rather they improved on gameplay then graphics. Top graphics just seem to take too long these days, and shorten games down to a couple of hours of gameplay with too much focus on sight seeing rather then the game itself.

Actually, the reason why most of your games are so short, is because of Microsoft's refusal to adopt blu-ray into the 360-thus severely hampering devs when making multi-format releases. And on top of that, most people don't realise that last gen games(xbox/ps2/gamecube) are no longer than today's games. Best example of this? Halo:Anniversary. It's pretty much the first combat evolved right down to 'the library' *shudders* with the current gen varnish. Anyways, it takes me roughly the same amount of time(4-5 hours of gametime, breaks not included) to complete that, as it does to complete Reach, or most of today's shooters.

.....Anyways, getting back to the subject at hand. I think that we'll most likely reach a pinnacle of visual representation if we're able to use promotional quality renders for gameplay use. CrimsonRisk mentioning the uncanny valley is a big thing, especially for me since 3D-rendering is what I do on DA. Once I get my new computer, I'm probably gonna come into alot more rendering power. So I've gotta ask. How close am I toward the uncanny valley with my work?

Of course gameplay is #1 but for Ryona purposes, better graphics is nice. :P

I'm going to be brutally honest, but I don't think we need another generation of consoles. I don't want another one, at least. The PS3 and 360 are still evolving as we speak, and simply better-looking graphics aren't going to make me want to jump up and throw down hundreds of dollars on a PS4. I'm content with the generation of games we have. Just look at games like Uncharted and Killzone 3; they look ridiculously realistic as it is. If it weren't for third-party PS3 and 360 games having to be equals in terms of graphical quality, thanks to disc limitations on the 360, all PS3 games could potentially look as good as those aforementioned games do with the right amount of effort. For ryona purposes, though, yes, nicer graphics are always a plus. All in all, though, I'm content with the way things are.

I will say that Nintendo does need a new console, as the Wii is so far behind. The Wii U certainly isn't what I had in mind, though. That looks disastrous.

Right now, I feel like you're not even slightly close. Your characters have good looking, well proportioned bodies, which is even more important in your work because of the intricate poses they're often doing. You've also made a smart decision by keeping your faces cartoonish. I feel like this allows you to express emotions effectively while at the same time distancing yourself from the uncanny valley. Obviously, a lot of 3D artists must be tempted to improve the quality of their renders as the technology improves and I have no idea where you should draw the line. I trust you'll figure it out.

I don't think it's going to get as good as pre-rendered pictures. Wouldn't it be around as good as what computers have now, or maybe a little better? I'm not familiar with pc gaming.

I heard a quote stating that the next generation of gaming consoles would most likely be the last. Which makes sense, considering that even the current generations have had a sluggish time due to lack of developers as well as the new rise of indie gaming on PC/phone/tablet. The future of gaming is <$30 titles from direct download services (Steam, gamersgate, etc.), not $60 discs.

It's just that right now, the reason I render the way I do, is because of resources vs experience. Once I get a new machine, I'm probably gonna start experimenting with more advanced shaders, and more detailed backgrounds. Actually, talk of the uncanny valley would make for a great journal entry. :-)

I for one, hope they don't rule out disks completely for two reasons. Firstly, not everybody has their consoles online. I myself didn't get mine up until 2010, due to broadband being unavailable where I was at the time. If you were to completely do away with retail purchases, then you're locking some gamers out of the market altogether due to them being unable and/or unwilling to put their consoles online.

And secondly, alot of jobs are reliant on the retail side of the games industry. If online distribution completely takes over retail disks, then places like gamestop become obsolete, and the people who work there 'no longer needed'. The same also goes for those who physically manufacture the disks themselves, online distribution renders them irrelevant. Basically, online distribution would put alotta people out of work, and I don't need to tell anyone how people not working is bad for economies in general.

I know this post hasn't contributed anything to ryona, but right now, all we can do is speculate on what future games might look like, and thus, there really isn't much to discuss.

If Gamestop is obsolete, then there's no reason for its continued existence. That should hold true regardless of your beliefs in capitalism/socialism (and it doesn't exactly provide a necessary service to require subsidization). And the manufacture... well, a plant in China or Mexico closing down isn't going to break my heart.

I think you missed my point overall on the download stuff, though. The point is that you wouldn't download it onto a console, the point is why do you own a console to download cheaper independent games? No one is going to go buy a 360 just to play Minecraft or Angry Birds or whatever.

As for your art and uncanny valley, a big thing working in your favor is that its not animated-- obviously, that gives a lot more room to make something without the brain yelling "ewwww!".. anyone who saw that fully-rendered talking head from about a year ago knows what I mean.

The games look great for sure but it's clear at this point the consoles have been tapped out. The 360 and PS3 simply cannot run games like BF3 on max, with 64 players.

Though I do agree with the notion of next gen being when we almost peak in terms of graphical fidelity.

I don't think we have anything to worry about as far as physical copies of games are concerned. From what I've read, most people prefer to have the CD of the game unless we're talking about cheap indie games.

just how the new consoles wouldn't be too expensive... believe a lot of great graphics can appear there! :9

for PC games I guess a lot of people stick to steam nowadays? cheaper (during discount period) and easier to bring around I guess... and lots of interesting indie games that appears there...
