Plot summary:

Set in the distant future, astronaut Barbarella (Jane Fonda) is sent on a mission to find the evil Duran Duran in the city of Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour, and retrieve a weapon which threatens the entire galaxy. Along the way she encounters numerous ryona situations which conveniently enables her to lose her already scantily clad clothing (and later have sex with numerous male figures who save her from these situations).

She crash lands on the planet Lythion, and is immediately attacked by a gang of vicious children who tie her and let their killer dolls eat Barbarella (she gets rescued though).

When Barbarella arrives to Sogo, she finds out that the city is ruled by a lesbian Queen who sleeps in a chamber able to make her fantasies a reality. The city is rife with sexual machines, torture chambers and drug dens where women smoke men's essence while they swim in giant hookah's. Barbarella gets captured and is put into a deadly bird case to be pecked to death by parakeets.

However, she is once again saved and after thanking her male savior, she sets on to stop Duran Duran only to get captured by him. Duran Duran then tortures Barbarella in the Excessive Machine, a sex organ that can drive a victim to death by pleasure.

What's cool about the movie:
  • There are numerous great ryona situations in the movie.
  • Jane Fonda starring Barbarella is absolutely hot, wearing very revealing clothing (less and less as movie goes on).
  • Excessive Machine scene and faked orgasms.
  • The 1980's band Duran Duran took their name from the villain of the movie.

What a weeeeird movie. And this was shown on theaters? It must have been awkward to watch before the advent of the 'ryona' term.

Hehe, Robert Rodriguez was going to even make a remake of this film but it was cancelled for some reason :( And there were many stars wanting to play Barbarella such as Rose McGowan, Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood. Would have been awesome...

Even before "ryona", there was still "damsel in distress". A lot of people a little older than me started being interested in bondage and DiD because of detective comics around that time period, too.
